Nancy Davis, the creative force behind Nancy Davis Studio, has built a thriving jewelry business that proves it is never too late to turn a passionate side hustle into a flourishing full-time career. Through a blend of artistic evolution, smart digital marketing, and an authentic connection with her audience, Davis has established a nationwide footprint in the handmade jewelry market.

How the Business Came to Be

Davis’s entrepreneurial spirit was forged long before she ever picked up her jewelry tools. After being laid off from a real estate appraiser role in 2000, she pivoted to medical transcription and eventually launched her own transcription company. However, due to rapid technological changes, her transcription business came to an end in the middle of last year.

Rather than viewing this as a setback, Davis used it as a catalyst. She had already been experimenting with art on the side—starting with decorative bottles made from recycled glass, moving into abstract and acrylic paintings, crafting custom tumblers, and eventually discovering a love for jewelry making a couple of years ago. With her transcription career behind her, Davis made the bold decision to prioritize her creative side hustle and take it to the next level.

Triumphs and Milestones

The decision to go all-in on her art paid off remarkably well. Within just eight months of her transcription business closing, Davis found success in her new venture.

A cornerstone of her rapid growth has been her digital presence. Davis identifies her YouTube channel as her greatest success since starting the business. By filming and sharing engaging jewelry-making tutorials, she has successfully attracted a dedicated audience of both buyers and fellow creators.

Coupled with her content creation is a strong e-commerce foundation. Built on Shopify, her website has gained significant traction and helped her expand her customer base across the entire United States. She has also diversified her revenue streams; in addition to online sales, her pieces are featured in two art galleries, and she is developing a growing income stream creating merchandise for the Kappa Alpha fraternity, which is marketed through a national marketplace.

Overcoming Struggles and Growing Pains

Like any entrepreneur, Davis has faced her share of obstacles. A self-described “impatient person” who desires instant gratification, she has had to learn that sustainable growth takes time. She credits her marketing consultant—who also transitioned from ring-making to business consulting—for teaching her patience and helping her embrace a “process first” mindset.

Pricing her artwork has been one of her toughest challenges. Because she genuinely loves what she does and wants her customers to enjoy her pieces, Davis admits she has a tendency to undervalue her own work. Furthermore, she notes that asking clients for reviews is a personal weakness, even though her customers frequently express their love for her products.

Davis has also had to master entirely new skill sets to run her online storefront, such as purchasing a camera and learning how to shoot consistent product photography using a ring light. Having never graduated from college, she proudly views these hands-on life and business experiences as her true degree.

Plans for the Future

Looking ahead, Davis has a refreshingly grounded vision for Nancy Davis Studio. Having previously stepped away from a management role as part-owner of a downtown art gallery to focus on her own art, she wants to ensure her business remains a joy rather than a burden.

While she admits she would wave a magic wand for “faster growth” if she could, she is adamant that she does not want Nancy Davis Studio to become a “mega business”. Instead, her strategic plan is to remain entirely hands-on and dominate her specific niche. Her ultimate goal is to grow the studio to a comfortable, sustainable size that allows her and her retired spouse to live comfortably and maintain the freedom to do what they want, when they want.
