A Note from your author: I met Cory in 2024 and we worked together on some videos. In that experience, I came away with two things of note: Cory was a stand up dude who was reliable in business and Cory absolutely loves what he does. So as I began my adventures here at Upstate Community Press, he was one of the first folks on my list. So glad that my first article is with Cory and I get to share a story I had heard last year about passion and a desire to help that I found so admirable. I hope you dear reader enjoy this chat as much as I did and when you think about the things you do in life, you are filled with as much passion and satisfaction as today’s subject.

Today’s Community Highlight

When Cory Curtis first stepped into a gym, he wasn’t chasing trophies — he just didn’t want to feel lazy. Back then, he was living in Charleston, waiting tables, and looking for something to do before 4 p.m. each day. What began as a way to stay productive soon sparked a journey that would change not only his life — but the lives of dozens of others.

Today, Cory is an IFBB Pro, the founder of CobraCor, and a full-time fitness coach guiding clients through transformations that go far beyond the physical. From helping clients lose weight sustainably to supporting mental health through fitness and hormonal balance, Cobracor has become a platform for deep, lasting change.

But like many meaningful ventures, it started from necessity — and a lot of heart.

From Passion to Purpose

“I just wanted to feel like I was doing something with my day,” Cory recalls. “Going to the gym made me feel like I had accomplished something.”

After finishing college and settling into a rhythm of work and beach days, Cory started training simply to stay in shape. But it wasn’t long before friends began encouraging him to explore bodybuilding. “I was the last person who wanted to be on stage — especially in my underwear,” he laughs. “But the positive pressure pushed me.”

He entered his first competition in 2016, learning to pose literally backstage. To his surprise, he placed well — and found himself hooked.

“Everyone was so welcoming. It completely changed my perspective. I knew that day that I was going to stick with it.”

Soon after, Cory was fielding questions from friends and coworkers. “How do I lose weight? What should I be eating?” he remembers. “I started writing programs for people, just wanting to help.”

That generosity snowballed — until he found himself coaching up to 15 people for free. “At a certain point, I realized I had to start charging. It was growing into something real.”

Leaving Security (Literally) to Build Something Better

At the time, Cory was working in nuclear security and later as a chemical operator — long shifts, high stress, and not much fulfillment.

“I was sitting in front of six monitors, running pressure and temperature tests for plastics. It was fine, but it didn’t fill my bucket. I’d be sneaking in time to write meal plans during work.”

In 2021, Cory made the leap. “One day during a shift, I walked into my manager’s office and said, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ That was it.”

He’d already earned his professional status in bodybuilding in 2019 and launched Cobracor at the end of that same year. But leaving the comfort of a steady paycheck for the uncertainty of entrepreneurship was still a big move.

“I was making more in my day job, but I knew this is what I was supposed to be doing. I wanted to wake up with purpose.”

A Coaching Brand That Listens First

Today, CobraCor is thriving — but it’s not your typical fitness brand.

“Most of my clients come to me after they’ve tried something else,” Cory says. “They’ve plateaued, regained weight, or hit some other wall.”

Rather than offering one-size-fits-all plans, Cory leans into problem-solving. His approach is holistic, focusing on everything from stress and schedule management to hormonal balance and digestion.

“It’s not just about macros,” he explains. “It’s about listening — to what the body is saying, and what’s not being said out loud.”

That attention to detail and empathy shows in his results. Clients from all walks of life — from busy moms and professionals to seasoned athletes — work with CobraCor because they feel understood.

“I’ve coached doctors, nurses, and folks who’ve been told by other coaches, ‘This is just how your body is.’ We found a way.”

Real Stories, Real Change

While Cory is proud of the pro athletes he’s coached — including AJ Wallace who turned IFBB Pro this year with Cory — it’s the deeply personal wins that stay with him most.

He recalls one client who lost 90 pounds and now plans to compete in her first show at 58. Another, Bo , says the lifestyle “saved his life” after struggling with alcohol.

“It’s not always about the stage,” Cory says. “Sometimes, it’s about someone sending me their meal plan without being asked — because they’re excited about their progress. That’s when it turns from something they have to do into something they get to do.”

For many, fitness becomes a replacement for destructive habits — offering structure, community, and a sense of self-worth.

“Taking care of your health is the ultimate form of self-respect,” Cory says. “You don’t have to let yourself down.” Cory’s focus on health and fitness isn’t just vanity, it’s larger goal is to rebuild the self respect that is often stripped from us by life.

What’s Next for CobraCor?

Looking ahead, Cory and his wife Gracie are dreaming bigger. Their shared vision is a brick-and-mortar wellness facility in Greenville by 2026 — one that combines coaching, hormone therapy, gut testing, and integrative health practices.

“We want to create a place where people can get real solutions,” Cory explains. “Affordable, effective, and compassionate care — not the predatory stuff we’ve seen in some local clinics.”

Gracie is currently earning her certification in integrative functional health, and the two hope to build a space that brings all aspects of wellness under one roof. “There’s a real synergy between what she does and what I do,” he says. “This vision makes sense for the people we’re already helping — and for so many others who need more support than they’re getting.”

On a personal note, I have witnessed this predation that Cory and I discussed. As a younger man I used a local cookie cutter clinic for HRT, I paid an obscene amount of money & received terrible advice. I was actually threatened and fired from the care of this yes man doctor because I refused to take medication I did not need. If anyone broke their money making mold they were threatened. This is the battle that many folks face on their path to getting healthy.

Spreading the Word

Most CobraCor clients find Cory through social media, reviews, or referrals — but he’d love to see more local  growth.

“If I could fix one thing, it’d be getting more eyes on what we’re doing,” he says. “I know we can help people. I just want them to know we’re here.”

At its core, Cory’s mission is about impact, not ego. His success isn’t measured in stage wins or income — it’s measured in lives changed. “To me, success is doing what you love every day, with people you love, and for people you love. That’s it.”

And if you’ve met Cory, you know he means it.
